Omac 1

I Miss Jack Kirby

I'm not sure if Omac still means One Man Army Corps, but it sure looks like it.

When I took a peek at the core creative team for this, I found them very interesting. It's Keith Giffen, the legend who did those Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice League International issues everybody loves so much, and DC head honcho Dan DiDio. I never expected to find DiDio in the creatives blurb. The blurb itself made me shake my head: It's written in that wacky Stan Lee Marvel manner, you know like, "Happy" Herb Trimpe, and so on. It just does not work when DC does it - I appreciate it though, it made me smile.

Keith Giffen must be responsible for the art because we all know Jack Kirby is no longer around. That's the first thing I thought about when I was going through the panels: Jack Kirby. It's his style, it's even his Omac, that Giffen is emulating; although this Omac is more hulking than Kirby's lithe powerhouse. It's the Jack Kirby style and I like it. You can see it in the panel above and specially in the faces on the panel below.

I think it was a good decision for DC to follow the master's style - now if only they started giving Jack's heirs his well-deserved piece of the pie the world would be a better place.

Omac is a solid read, action and mystery blending perfectly. I had fun reading this inaugural issue and look forward to the next.
