Ben Grimm goes to Avenger's Mansion for a poker game. His FF identication is also good for the Avengers. Unsurprisingly, we find out that the Avengers are using FF tech. Ok, I take that back. It is surprising. Richards tech instead of Stark tech.
Notice the salutation 'Ben Grimm' instead of 'The Thing'? Unlike the Avengers the FF do not keep secret identities - in this case, it's not like Ben can put on any kind of disguise to take a break from being so unique looking.
Ah, how refreshing, it's not some uber important crisis. It's a poker game.
Wonder Man reveals why he has to wear shades in a poker game.
Wonder Man, a.k.a. Simon Williams, is, well, a zombie, long before that term became fashionable. His eyes are leaking the energy that has so unnaturally brought him back to life.
While the poker game is going on, a S.H.I.E.L.D. weapons facility is getting raided. But why worry about that? Let's enjoy the game.
Ms. Marvel wins as Fury gets the intel on the raid. The head of S.H.I.E.L.D. plays it cool, confident that S.H.I.E.L.D. defenses will hold and that the Avengers are not needed. Fury will sadly lose his bet on this one too.
Ben may be a good guy but he still can't resist turning sexist when he's losing.
Dum Dum Dugan makes a reference to another Marvel mag that is running during this time.
I'm writing this from the vantage point of early 2018 when the comics arm of Marvel is in a shambles. Ah, the good old days.
Thing and the Avengers go into action but they're not using the Quinjet, they're using the Fantasticar.
Soon enough . . .
What you see is the Sky Dragon, referred to in this comic as the only single craft that could effectively challenge a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.
Look, my two all-time favorites, Hank McCoy and Ben Grimm in the same panel!
The Beast strikes first.
The Thing still can't get over the fact that Ms. Marvel was winning at poker tonight.
The purpose of this raid is revealed.
Did the bad guys just kill Nick Fury?
Hmmmm.
Meanwhile, Wonder Man might as well have been hit by lightning but it's really hard to kill the undead.
This is rare. Thing and the Avengers are up against somebody without a costume.
It turns out Nick Fury was wearing bulletproof clothing.
And that's it for Thing and the Avengers. By the time they finish up it's nearly morning.
