Actually, it would be more accurate for me to say 'Welcome to the Ultimates Universe where Peter Parker is dead'. If that sounds confusing or distressing, take a seat and let me explain. The Ultimates Universe is a separate universe created by Marvel so that they can take the characters that we know and love - like Spider-Man - and retell their stories with a different spin. The Spider-Man you will see in these pages is a different one from the one in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I should say 'the Spider-Men', since there are two of them. In the Ultimates Universe Peter Parker did become Spider-Man but he died. Miles Morales became the second Spider-Man. What that means to the comics buyer is that when looking to purchase Ultimate Spider-Man, he gets a choice between Peter Parker or Miles Morales.

Ultimate Spider-Man stories were written in the twenty-first century and reflect millenial sensibilities. That is to say, you get contemporary viewpoints and lose the idiosyncracies of the original Spider-Man tales written from the sixties on. Depending on your taste, this could be viewed as an advantage. I should also add that the approach taken to these stories are decidedly different. The classic Spidey tales seem 'packed' compared to the Ultimates tales which tend to focus on presenting the depth of a particular scenario- taking several panels where the classic tales would only take one. For single comics, this usually made for a 'fast' read, but that shouldn't be an issue given that you will be purchasing a trade paperback with collected issues.
